Why are most Republicans denying an extesion of unemployment benefits but pushing for tax cuts for the rich?

Extending the Bush tax cuts is double the cost of extending unemploymet benefits in the worst recession in modern history. What's the logic in this? Are the politicians just engaging in some partisan hackery? I could understand the argument that the rich invest, provide jobs etc but that takes time - something the unemployed do NOT have. Why would anyone take this approach? This seems so illogical
